NEED. The Churches need more shepherds and leaders “rightly handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15. There is a deficiency of in-depth Bible training across the globe, particularly training that emphasizes the historical and cultural roots of Christianity that brings color and life to the scriptures. Too few pastors and ministry leaders have ever visited the Holy Land and benefited from the understanding of Biblical Israel this provides.
GALILEAN SCHOLARS. To address this need, we’ve established the Galilean Scholars program. The Galilean Scholars is a competitive scholarship program to cover the program fees for students enrolling in “The Land, History, and Culture of Biblical Israel,” a study-in-Israel course designed for lasting impact, fortifying Christian leaders in their communications of the historicity of the Bible. The course is offered through the Galilean Institute to colleges that are members of the Galilean Education Consortium (GEC), administered by the Institute. This intensive, 8-week, 4-credit, graduate level course will combine online classes with 15-days of field studies in Israel where the program fees will cover anticipated expenses beyond tuition (~$7,000/student).
The program recruits top scholars, seminary students, church workers, and ministers (future Church leaders) for a ‘bootcamp” experience that emphasizes the historical and cultural roots of Christianity in the Holy Land. Lessons will examine the geography, history and culture that shaped the major events, religious practices, and beliefs recorded in the Bible by visiting locations where significant events took place. The Holy Land has been described as “the Fifth Gospel.” All of Jesus’ teaching was in Israel and study in Israel provides imagery and color to his words on the pages of the Bible. This course, providing a richer understanding of the context of the Bible, prepares students to better communicate the major themes of the narrative and facilitates their life-long learning. The course also provides scholars a better awareness of the cultural context for the current politics in the Holy Land. This is intended as a life-changing experience for leaders early in their careers.
The initial study-in-Israel course will be delivered through partnership and joint promotion with Jerusalem University College, JUC, established for 60 years on Mt. Zion, Jerusalem, with an existing network of schools. This first course has engaged Dr. Barry Beitzel, eminent Professor of Old Testament Studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, as the subject matter expert. Field instructors will be drawn from several noted scholars resident in Israel.
